"Doctor of Directional Listening" Amazes Judges at the 3rd "Yuchuang Yuxin Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Cloud Summit"
On August 4, at the 3rd "Yuchuang Yuxin Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Cloud Summit" hosted by the Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau and the Municipal Finance Bureau, and organized by the Municipal Employment Service Administration, the "Doctor of Directional Listening" developed by a team of top graduates from Peking and Tsinghua Universities left judges in awe.

In the future, square dance enthusiasts may no longer need to worry about disturbing others—the music they play could be audible only to themselves. This is not a fantasy. Song Ren, a Peking University graduate and CMO/partner of Chongqing Qingwen Technology, explained that his team won first prize in last year's "Yuchuang Yuxin Competition." The team, consisting of Tsinghua doctoral advisors, experts, and graduates from Peking University and Nanyang Technological University, has developed groundbreaking technology that allows sound to be controlled like a beam of light. It propagates within a designated area with only one reflection, eliminating noise disturbance. The range can be customized from a few to dozens of square meters. Currently, this technology can effectively address the common issue of noise disturbance caused by square dance music.
Song Ren noted that their company is among the first globally to independently develop directional sound technology. They pioneered the establishment of an entirely new discipline—ultrasonic acoustics—in China. By leveraging ultrasonic carriers, they control the direction and area of sound propagation, refine sound quality, and provide personalized solutions to prevent noise interference.

This "magical" technology can be applied in museums and exhibition halls, allowing each exhibit to emit individual audio explanations without mutual interference. The company has already collaborated with the National Museum of China, the Capital Museum, and the Three Gorges Museum, gradually enabling exhibits to "obediently" produce sound. It is particularly effective in special spaces with strong echoes, such as the Baiheliang Underwater Museum.
The technology also has broad applications in the banking sector: tellers' conversations can be heard only by customers, enhancing the security, privacy, and experience of counter services. This year, "Doctor of Directional Listening" partnered with automakers to develop independent sound zones within vehicles, allowing drivers to use navigation and make phone calls without interfering with music or entertainment in other seats, thereby improving driving safety and comfort.
The team remains dedicated to sound technology research and has also developed frequency conversion technology for the hearing-impaired as an alternative to hearing aids. While traditional hearing aids simply amplify sound, this new technology adjusts specific frequencies based on the individual's hearing loss, protecting ear health and addressing the challenges faced by those with hearing impairments.
As a technology-driven innovative enterprise, the team acknowledges the inherent difficulties of entrepreneurship. Ultrasonic acoustics is a entirely new field, once thought to have reached its peak in sound wave technology. However, through relentless effort, they have demonstrated that even more can be achieved.
